Gabapentin

Gabapentin is a popular medication that has anti-convulsant and analgesic properties. It belongs to a group of medications called gabapentinoids, which regulate the neurotransmitter gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA). Neurotransmitters are chemicals within the central nervous system, which is comprised of the brain and spine. By regulating this neurotransmitter, it can help to treat partial seizures and neuropathic pain (pain derived from damage to the nerves).

It is most known under the brand name Neurontin. This medication was developed by researchers at Parke-Davis, a subsidiary of the global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. Before Parke-Davis was acquired by Warner-Lambert in 1970, and subsequently Pfizer in 2000, it was oldest and largest pharmaceutical company, being founded in 1866. The medication was founded by two pharmacists there under the names of Satzinger and Hartenstein in 1975.

After years of studies and development into a viable medication, it was approved by regulatory agencies for the treatment of epilepsy in May 1993. This was shortly followed by approval from the Food and Drug Association (FDA), for use alongside existing anti-seizure medications, to enhance their effectiveness. It was subsequently approved for the treatment of neuropathic pain. In 2004, it became available as a generic medication, which means that it contains the exact same active ingredient as the branded medication but is available at much cheaper prices.

What is Gabapentin Used for?

Gabapentin pills have a variety of conditions that they can be used for but are typically prescribed for neuropathic pain and partial seizures. Neuropathic pain, also known as neuralgia or nerve pain, relates to damage to the nerves, that causes what is often described as a stabbing, burning or tingling sensation.

The severity of neuropathic pain can also vary a lot too, ranging from a numbness in the legs or feet, to more severe pain. It can be caused by progressive diseases but can also be present because of injury or physical trauma. It is not uncommon and affects between 7-10% of the population.

There are a variety of reasons why someone may need to take Gabapentin for pain. Some of these may be:

  • Shingles - this is a painful condition that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, herpes zoster. It is characterised by a blotchy rash on one side of the body. When the virus is active, it can attack the nerves endings, resulting in neuropathic pain that can be severe and may last for years.
  • Diabetes - this is a condition that people have when they have issues converting food into energy. When the food is broken down, it is converted into glucose. If the body does not produce enough insulin, which is what happens when someone has diabetes, the glucose is unable to enter our cells and fuel our body. The resulting high blood sugar levels can then injure nerves throughout the body.
  • Multiple sclerosis - this condition affects the brain and nerves. The immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerves, which eventually permanently damages the nerves, causing neuropathic pain.
  • Injury - injury to the spinal cord especially can cause neuropathic pain. One rare type of neuropathic pain that can occur is a sensation known as 'phantom limb'. This occurs following the amputation of a body part, most commonly an arm or a leg. The nerves re-wire themselves following the amputation, and can send pain signals to the brain, notifying it that something is wrong.

As mentioned before, there are many different Gabapentin uses. It is also prescribed to treat seizures in conditions such as epilepsy. Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain when someone has repeated seizures. These seizures occur due to an excess of electrical activity in the brain, which causes the messages that are sent in the brain to get confused, resulting in a seizure. Various studies suggest this condition is one of the most common brain disorders in the world, affecting around 1 in 100 people.

Although Gabapentin pills are only prescribed for these two purposes, people also take Gabapentin for sleep and Gabapentin for anxiety. As it can calm electrical activity in the brain, it can work as an anti-anxiety medication and insomnia medication, especially when the insomnia is caused by anxiety itself. Studies have shown that with repeated use of this medication, the sufferers gain a longer and more restful sleep.

How Gabapentin Works

Before you buy Gabapentin pills, you may wish to find out the exact science behind how it works. Its method of working is different depending on the condition that it is treating. With epilepsy, the seizures are caused by an excess of electrical activity in the brain. This medication helps to prevent the brain cells from working as quickly, and reduces the electrical activity, which stops seizures before they start to fully take hold.

With neuropathic pain, the nerves often trigger incorrectly, due to a condition, illness, or physical trauma. When these nerves are triggered incorrectly, pain messages are sent to the brain, which makes the brain thinks a part of the body is injured when it is not. By changing the way that these nerves send pain signals, a dose of Gabapentin 300 mg can reduce or even stop neuropathic pain from occurring.

With anxiety disorders, anxiety is often triggered by an imbalance of brain chemicals, which unnecessarily triggers our fight or flight response. This medication helps to treat this by calming electrical activity in the brain that is activated by our fight or flight response, which reduces the messages that are being sent around our brain. Additionally, it can also indirectly enhance the effects of GABA in the brain, a chemical which is responsible for producing a calming effect. This is also the same method which it helps to treat sleeping disorders such as insomnia.

How Long Gabapentin Lasts

This medication is known to have a half-life of five to seven hours. The half life of a medication is how long it takes for the level of medication in the body to be reduced by half. Because this medication is metabolised in the kidneys instead of the liver, it does not last in the body for that long after consumption. It is expelled from the body after a total of between five and eight half lives have passed, which in this case would be between 25 and 56 hours. On average, it usually takes around 48 hours for the body to process the medication entirely.

There are several other factors which determine how long the medication stays in your system too. As people are different, the way medications affect them are different, which includes how long this medication would last. Some factors that can affect this are:

  • Kidney function - as this medication is processed and eliminated from the body via the kidneys, if someone has kidney disease or poor kidney function, then it can take longer for the medication to be expelled from the body. Studies have shown that for people with kidney disease, the half-life of this medication can be up to seven times longer than people with healthy kidney function.
  • Age - people who are younger tend to process medications more quickly than those who are older, usually due to kidney function.
  • Gabapentin interactions - some medications can interact with Gabapentin pills to increase the amount of it in the body. These include naproxen, cimetidine, and morphine. Likewise, some decrease the amount in the body, such as certain antacids.

Gabapentin Dosage for Pain Relief

Gabapentin dosage depends on what condition the medication is being used for.

  • For the treatment of partial seizures, neuropathic pain, or anxiety, you should be taking 300 mg on day one, which should increase up to Gabapentin 600 mg on day two, and another 300 mg on day three. No more than 3.6 g should be taken daily, split into three even doses spread throughout the day. If the pain is particularly bad, your doctor may prescribe Gabapentin 800 mg instead, to be taken three times daily.
  • For insomnia, it is recommended that you take one Gabapentin 100 mg before bed as a minimum dose, up to 400 mg as a maximum dose.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, and not chewed, dissolved, or split. You can take this medication with or without food, however, ensure that if you pick a method, you stick with it, so the levels of medication are staying consistent.

Gabapentin Side Effects

Despite this medication being known for its safety and reliability, there are still Gabapentin side effects which can occur. The most common of these occur in no more than 10 percent of the people who take this medication. It is important however before you buy Gabapentin online that you conduct your own research into the side effects that can occur while taking this medication, so you are fully prepared. Some of the more prevalent side effects are:

  • Tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Water Retention

Please note, some people may be allergic to this medication. If you ever start to show any of the effects of an allergy to Gabapentin pills, you should cease taking them immediately.

Is Gabapentin Safe for Everyone?

This medication is known for its safety and is well tolerated by most of the population. However, there are certain things to note before you take this medication, just like before you buy painkillers of any kind:

  • You should not take this medication if you are drinking alcohol. The mixture of Gabapentin and alcohol can increase the effects of both, while also increasing the side effects. As a result, if enough of both these substances are consumed, it can result in a Gabapentin overdose.
  • Those who are suffering from absence and myoclonic seizures should not take this medication, as it can make the condition worse.
  • You should not take antacids alongside this medication, as it can alter how the medication is absorbed into the body.
  • Taking this medication over an extended period can result in Gabapentin addiction, where your tolerance becomes raised, and you need to take more of the medication to feel the same effects. If this happens, you must speak with your doctor to discuss the possibility of changing medications. If you do stop taking this medication, you must taper the reduction of medication, as opposed to stopping immediately, as this can result in Gabapentin withdrawals.

Gabapentin vs Pregabalin

These two medications in terms of effects are similar, with some minor differences. Firstly, Gabapentin is far more popular than Pregabalin, with over 45 million prescriptions per year being issued. Some people who have taken both medications issue Gabapentin warnings, stating that it is not as effective as Pregabalin.

However, although this may be true for some, it is not true for all, as by virtue of us being human, we are all unique, and so process different medications differently. These medications also have different side effects and have different off-label uses.

Before You Buy Gabapentin Online

  • Exercise - has been shown to increase endorphins, which can help with pain.
  • Alternative therapies - such as tai chi, yoga, and acupuncture, these have all been found to be effective to a certain point.
  • Physical therapy - not only can this prevent future injuries, but it can also help to treat your pain now.
